It is very contagious so please call our office if you suspect that you or your child has it so we can treat it and prevent the spread.
Contagious, Common — and Treatable. We’re Here to Help.
Molluscum contagiosum is a highly contagious viral skin infection that causes small, raised bumps on the skin. While typically mild, it can spread quickly—especially among children. At Meira Dermatology, we provide safe and effective treatment options to control symptoms, reduce spread, and help your skin heal faster.
Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a poxvirus that infects the outer layer of the skin. It appears as:
- Small, flesh-colored or pink bumps
- Smooth, round lesions with a central dimple (umbilication)
- Bumps that may become itchy, red, or irritated over time
- Clusters that commonly occur on the face, neck, arms, torso, thighs, or genitals
In most cases, molluscum is harmless and self-limiting, but it can persist for 6 to 18 months or longer—especially in adults or those with weakened immune systems.
This virus is very contagious and spreads through:
- Direct skin-to-skin contact (including during play or sports)
- Sharing towels, razors, or clothing
- Scratching or picking the bumps, which spreads it to other parts of the body
Children, athletes in close-contact sports, and immunocompromised individuals are most at risk.
While the condition may resolve on its own, treatment is often recommended to reduce spread, irritation, and cosmetic concerns. At Meira Dermatology, treatment options include:
Cryotherapy – Freezing off the lesions with liquid nitrogen
Topical treatments – Prescription antiviral or keratolytic creams
Curettage – Gently scraping off the bumps under local anesthesia
Cantharidin (“beetle juice”) – A painless in-office topical application that causes lesions to blister and fall off
Our team will tailor the treatment plan based on the number, size, and location of the lesions—as well as patient age and immune status.
Don’t scratch or pick at lesions
Keep bumps covered with clothing or bandages
Wash hands regularly, especially after touching affected areas
Avoid sharing towels, razors, gym gear, or clothing
Avoid contact sports or communal water activities during flare-ups
Schedule an appointment if:
- Lesions are spreading or persist for several months
- Bumps become red, painful, or infected
- Your child has eczema, which can worsen symptoms
- You want to reduce cosmetic concerns or minimize transmission
Early diagnosis and appropriate care can help shorten the duration, reduce scarring, and stop the spread to others.
