Dermatofibroma is caused by an overgrowth of a number of cell types in the dermis layer of the skin. The growths often develop after some type of trauma to the skin, even something as simple as a bug bite. It often looks like small round or oval bumps. They can be flesh colored or brown or reddish. They are often found on the arms and legs.
Small, Firm Bump on Your Skin? Let’s Examine It Together.
A dermatofibroma is a common benign skin growth that often appears after minor skin trauma — like a bug bite, ingrown hair, or shaving nick. While harmless, these bumps can become irritated or cosmetically bothersome. At Meira Dermatology, we offer professional evaluation, monitoring, and removal options when needed for your peace of mind.
Dermatofibromas are non-cancerous growths that develop due to the overproduction of various skin cells within the dermis, the thick middle layer of your skin. They typically appear as:
- Firm, raised nodules
- Round or oval in shape
- Tan, brown, reddish, or purple in color
- Often less than 1 cm in size
- Frequently found on the arms, legs, and shoulders
When pinched, a dermatofibroma may dimple inward, which can help distinguish it from other types of skin lesions.
While the exact cause is not always known, dermatofibromas often form as a response to:
- Minor skin trauma (bug bites, splinters, small cuts)
- Shaving injuries or ingrown hairs
- Inflammatory skin conditions
They are more common in adults, especially women, and can appear singly or in clusters.
Dermatofibromas are benign and non-contagious, meaning they do not spread and rarely pose a health risk. However, you should contact us if you notice:
- Sudden changes in color, size, or shape
- Repeated irritation, itching, or bleeding
- Rapid growth or appearance of multiple lesions
- Cosmetic concerns or discomfort when shaving or dressing
Our dermatology team can confirm the diagnosis and recommend the appropriate care.
In most cases, treatment is not necessary unless the lesion causes symptoms or cosmetic concern. We offer:
Surgical Removal
- Excision under local anesthesia
- May leave a scar, but fully removes the lesion
Steroid Injections
- Helps reduce inflammation, redness, or itching if the bump becomes irritated
Biopsy
- Performed if there is uncertainty in diagnosis or to rule out other skin conditions
Monitoring
- For lesions that are asymptomatic and not cosmetically bothersome, regular checkups may be recommended
If you’re unsure whether a spot is a dermatofibroma, it’s best to have it examined — especially if it:
- Changes rapidly in size or color
- Bleeds or itches persistently
- Becomes painful or inflamed
- Is located in a spot where it’s repeatedly irritated
